Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is for those leaving their home country for up to 364 days. Travel insurance plans offer a broad range of coverage including medical costs, flight cancellation, missed or delayed flight, lost baggage, and more.

Generally speaking, the insurance policy you have in your home country won’t cover you when you travel abroad. These policies also do not cover evacuation in the case of an emergency or repatriation of remains. If you get sick or injured abroad without travel insurance, the costs are significant. For these reasons, travel insurance is a necessity if you plan to be traveling abroad for less than 12 months.

Travel insurance covers trips less than 12 months in length

Travel insurance policies provide coverage for up to 364 days.

If you will be traveling for longer than 12 months, or moving abroad permanently, you will need to consider health/medical plans designed for longer stays abroad. For trips abroad over 12 months duration, travel insurance will not provide the coverage you need. We have a selection of health/medical plans that can provide the coverage you need.

Understanding what travel insurance covers

Travel insurance plans protect your trip abroad. Depending on your specific plan, your travel insurance plan can cover:

  • Inpatient and outpatient medical costs
  • Emergency evacuation
  • Repatriation of remains
  • Trip cancellation or delay
  • Lost or delayed baggage
  • Additional benefits

Every travel insurance plan offers a different level of protection. For example, while most plans offer coverage for medical costs and emergency situations, coverage for things such as trip cancellation or lost baggage may not be included. Many plans can be customized to include additional benefits, according to your individual travel needs.

Coverage types: What are the differences?

Single trip: Travel medical insurance

Travel medical insurance plans for a single trip offer medical coverage for accidents and illnesses while you are traveling abroad, including emergency evacuation and repatriation. Plans may also offer coverage for occurrences such as lost baggage, missed flights, trip delays, and more.

Multi-trip: Annual travel medical insurance

Annual travel medical insurance offers similar types of coverage as single trip travel medical insurance. Annual travel medical insurance is ideal for those who frequently travel abroad. These plans cover multiple trips, whether for business or pleasure, under the same policy up to 12 months at a time. Frequent travelers can rest assured knowing the coverage you need for all your trips is under a multi-trip annual travel insurance policy.

Trip protection: Trip cancellation/interruption insurance

Trip cancellation/interruption travel insurance covers occurrences such as trip cancellation, trip delay, and lost or delayed baggage. Medical expenses, emergency evacuation, and repatriation are also included. Planning a successful vacation or trip is not only an investment of your time, it’s also an investment of your money. An emergency could prevent you from going on your trip—but don't let it ruin your financial investment. When you’re traveling abroad, whether it is a short or long trip, trip cancellation/interruption insurance offers the protection and coverage you deserve.
